Message of His Highness the Crown Prince Akihito:

"The 20th Century has been an era of great achievements. These remarkable accomplishments, colourfully displayed here under the theme of 'Progress and Harmony for Mankind', have impressed me with the unlimited possibilities of human wisdom. I believe that the true progress of human society can only be achieved where harmony exists and harmony can so easily be lost in this age of rapid progress. I sincerely hope that with EXPO '70 as an incentive, the peoples of the world will deepen their mutual understanding and bring about true peace and progress for all."

German president Gustav Heineman - Extract of a speech on "The German Day", 13 April 1970

"The German participation also desires to illustrate how developments in science, technology and their economic utility are creating a condition undermining the call for elimination of poverty which still persists over wide areas of the world today. Further, the other motto proclaimed as guiding thought for this Exposition, 'Harmony' will be fully taken note of by us, also. The alternative for this originally musical term is dissonance. If we project both these concepts in social and political lights, the alternative will be: going hand in hand with, or against, each other.

If this Exposition contributes to the consolidation of the knowledge and recognition that going against each other, on the social as well as the political plan, is bound to drive our world into immeasurable catastrophes, that we must therefore exert all our efforts to attain the possibility of going hand in hand with each other, - then EXPO '70 will be rendering a service to mankind."

Peter Blake

The Japanese people are happy to host the first World Exposition on Asian soil - and Kurokawa stated that this kind of mad festivity has been a very great popular success. Perhaps it is slightly less successful as a means of communication because there are undoubtedly easier ways of gaining clarity about ideas and images than standing for hours in a line in order to rush through a multimedia pavilion.

Despite this, EXPO has kept its promise in multifarious ways. In the development of designs it has brought us the space-frame of Kenzo Tange's thematic pavilion and the inflatable roof over the US-Pavilion; in the field of theatrical innovation it has brought us the Canadian pavilion; and within urban design we have been presented with Tange's multi-level grid-work for moving people and conveyor belts. And the world would not have invested money in any of these things in the practical world of building and urban planning - only in the unreal world of a World Exposition are things like this actually built."
