Angola

A railroad track as axis of development

Nation: Angola
National Day: 17.09.00

At the core of Angola's contribution to EXPO2000 lies the Benguela railroad. On display are important cities along the track and the project "Lobito Corridor", which aims at the economic resuscitation of the regions along the railroad track. The Benguela railroad is the longest railroad track in the country, connecting the ports of Lobito and Benguala on the Angolan coast with the cobalt and copper mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

It is an important factor in regional development. During the civil war that ended in 1994, the track was interrupted in the country's interior and partially destroyed. Angola now shows the country's progress regarding its social and economic reconstruction.
