Carved from rosewood

Nation: Gambia
National Day: 22.08.00

The "bar" which offers information to the visitors at the stand of Gambia is made of fine, indigenous rosewood. Carved oxen decorate the front. They play an important part in the rural agriculture as draught animals. Peanuts are the most important export product of the country.

The model of a place where megaliths were found refer to the ancient colonisation history of Gambia. The real stone circles have a diameter of four to seven metres. The ancient burial places are said to be nearly three-thousand years old.

Gambia's ideas of the "dwelling of the future" are shown in a model, too. Here, environmentally harmless materials and installations for the generation of solar energy are combined with well-tried, air-conditioning construction styles. Saving energy is a must in Gambia because electricity is very expensive there.

As a country beside a river, Gambia also presents new forms of water management.
