Bridging the divide

Nation: Rwanda
National Day: 03.07.00

In Rwanda the aftermath of interethnic warfare which began in 1994 between Hutu and Tutsi can still be felt. Therefore, the government is making efforts to reconcile the ethnically divided population. In the African Hall Rwanda shows ways used to achieve this. Videos show joint self-help projects and events aimed at promoting national consciousness.

A further theme is environmental protection. In Hanover the Rwandans demonstrate how energy can be produced from renewable raw materials, papyrus, waste products from coffee and dried cow dung. Furthermore, there is a photo and video exhibition on the subject of biological farming. A model landscape features hedges, stone walls and reforestation as measures to prevent erosion.
