Swaziland

The Switzerland of Africa

Nation: Swaziland
National Day: 29.10.00

Have you ever strolled among sugar cane? You certainly can now, at the stand run by the kingdom of Swaziland. This small African country is one of the continent's largest sugar producers and has brought a real field to the EXPO.

The signs, suspended above it, draw attention to the stand from afar. They are oval, pointed at the ends and either covered with animal skins or decorated with fur patterns. These national symbols are repeated on the kingdom's flag. Today, the warriors' shields and spears can only be seen during traditional dances. The Swazi place great importance on tradition and preserve customs and rites passed down to them.

At the same time, the Swazi have managed to build up a modest, but solid prosperity. This prosperity, along with its mountains, are the reason why Swaziland is also known as the Switzerland of Africa.
