"Tanah Air", earth and water, is the name Indonesians apply to their country. The largest archipelago in the world, it consists of over 17,000 islands. At the EXPO Indonesia presents its ideas for sustainable development of the country. Its programme focuses on the central themes: how can we use energy and natural resources, such as the soil and water, while at the same time protecting the environment, a concept for waste disposal in towns and checking industrial pollution.

A further aim of the programme is to increase society's awareness of sustainable development. Indonesia sees the world symbolically as an "Orchestra of sustainable development", where many forces actively harmonise. The country's EXPO motto is: "Earth rhythms from the world's largest group of islands".
