Experiences with nature

Nation: Mongolia
National Day: 12.07.00

Yurt means "abode" or "home". The nomads who live in the steppes take the dome-shaped tent made of felt along with them on their journeys. The yurt is also a focal point in Mongolia's exhibition.

The sides of the nomads' tent consist of a flexible wooden framework. Felt strips, which repel the water and keep out the wind, are firmly fastened to this framework. The diameter of a yurt can measure up to 30 metres. The Nomads have learned how to survive in a tough natural environment and to treat it with respect. They hope to pass on this experience to EXPO visitors.

Mongolia is an agrarian country, and the north of the country is also rich in mineral raw materials, such as copper, gold, nickel and zinc. The country's goal is to utilise the natural resources without damaging the environment. The Mongolians expect EXPO to generate new ideas for this project.
