Albania

Through the bunker to the theatre

Nation: Albania
National Day: 03.09.00

For many years Albania was an unknown "blank area" on the map of Europe. The poorest European country isolated itself after the end of the second world war and has only opened up to foreign investors and visitors in recent years. The numerous bunkers scattered across the country still call to mind the dictatorship of the Communist Enver Hoxha.

Albania reconstructs such a bunker at the EXPO in Hanover to show the dark side of its history. As opposed to a real bunker, however, rays of lights shimmer here through small windows and illuminate the country's cultural wealth. In the second half of the Albanian pavilion visitors will find a replica of the amphitheatre of Butrint. It is here that they can experience the "new Albania" of today and tomorrow.
