Autonomous and yet together

Nation: Belgium
National Day: 22.06.00

In 1958, the Belgians wrote a courageous chapter in architectural history in 1958 with the Atomium in Brussels. For 2000, they have decided in favour of a functional building with white steel structure. A flat steel grid roof protects an extensive roof terrace with wooden boards.

The entrance area conceived as a turntable and designed by artists brings you to the various presentation rooms in the Belgian pavilion. The Flemish, Walloon and German-speaking communities and the Brussels region have separate exhibitions in their own rooms. The Flemish exhibition creates a fun-fair roundabout atmosphere, whereas the Walloons give a multi-media presentation in a dark room full of columns. In spite of all cultural variety, there is a humorous, artistic installation with panorama painting in the communal room to show what joins the Belgians in one nation.

The upper floor accommodates a wooden-panelled restaurant with a super atmosphere, which brings you out onto the roof terrace.

Idea for children and teenagers: At last you can ride a roundabout as long as you want for free! The original fair merry-go-round is in the exhibition of Flanders.
