Traditions dating back 4,000 years

People on the Solomon Islands cultivate rites and traditions some of which are 4.000 to 5,000 years old. For example, there is shell and red feather money that you can still use nowadays to buy goods in shops.

Even though the island state consists of only six large islands and many small yet uninhabited atolls there is an overall of 60 languages and dialects. The official language on the Solomon Islands is English. Yet most people talk to each other in pidgin, a mixture of English and Asian words.

There are mountains on one of the larger islands. They were created following long volcanic eruptions several million years ago. During the joint presentation of the Pacific island states at the EXPO, the country presents wooden crafts on its own island.
