Chronology of EXPO 92 in Seville
31 May 1976 - King Juan Carlos of Spain raises the subject of organising an international Latin American exposition during an official visit to Santo Domingo.
December 1981 - the Bureau International des Expositions (B.I.E.) is informed by the USA that Chicago was applying to hold a world exposition in remembrance of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.
3 March 1982 - The Spanish ambassador in Paris hands a letter to the B.I.E. president containing a request from the Spanish government to hold a world exposition in Seville in 1992 with the theme "The Birth of the New World".
17 June 1982 - The Spanish government announces to the B.I.E. that the exposition site in Seville would be La Cartuja island.
8 December 1982 - The B.I.E. General Assembly decides that the exposition should take place at two locations: Chicago and Seville.
15 June 1983 - The Spanish and US delegations present the general rules of the world exposition to the B.I.E. Seville will present the important role played by Spain and the city itself in the discovery of America; Chicago will present the advances made in the world at a cultural and scientific level. "The Age of Discovery" is proposed as the exposition theme.
7 November 1984 - Manuel Olivencia Ruiz is nominated Commissioner General of the world exposition in Seville. 10 April 1985 - A Spanish government decree launches the organisational structure of the world exposition organisation. Sociedad Estatal para la Exposicion Universal Seville 92 SA is founded to implement the world exposition.
15 February 1986 - The Spanish council of ministers approves the general plan for the exposition.
15 July 1986 - The jury reaches its decision on the ideas competition for the design of the exposition site. First prize goes ex aequo to Emilio Ambasz and Fernandes Ordoñez/Junquera/Perez Pita.
July 1987 - The city council of Seville approves the revised general plan for the city. The traffic and other infrastructural construction work for EXPO 92 begins.
4 December 1987 - Chicago turns down the contract to realise a world exposition because of administrative difficulties between the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois and the formation of an ecological protest movement against the planned exposition site in Lake Michigan.
July 1988 - Construction work beings on the Barqueta and Cartuja bridges.
March 1989 - Construction work begins on the World Trade Centre EXPO 92. Construction of the pavilions and transport systems takes place step by step.
2 May 1991 - Queen Sophia opens the new Santa Justa railway station and the new Teatro de la Maestranza. May 1991 - the built-up area is now twice the size of the EXPO site planned in the 1987 general plan.
19 July 1991 - Manuel Olivencia Ruiz resigns from the post of Commissioner General. He is replaced by Emilio Casinello Auban.
31 July 1991 - New airport terminal opened.
18 September 1991 - Sociedad Estatal Cartuja 93 SA founded to take over the site once the world exposition is finished.
November 1991 - The Japanese pavilion is the first foreign pavilion to be completed.
19 April 1992 - The AVE train opens up the high-speed railway line between Madrid and Seville.
20 April 1992 - King Juan Carlos opens the 1992 Seville World Exposition. Whilst the 1987 general plan anticipated 60 participants, the actual world exposition featured 108 countries, 17 autonomous regions, 23 international organisations, and seven companies with their own pavilions.
12 October 1992 - EXPO 92 closes.
